Twenty Killed in Kabul Attack

A Reuters reporter saw a vehicle that was carrying killed and injured security personnel in the area close to those, where police have been conducting an operation against alcohol and drug dealers.

Because the protests on Thursday seemed spontaneous, many doubted that an attacker could have made it from there to Kabul in time to intercept the police forces.

Hours later, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack through the group's own news service, Amaq.

At least 11 people were killed in a suicide bombing targeting security forces in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday.

The attack took place around 8.30 pm (9.30 pm IST) when the shopkeepers at the market were reportedly protesting against the police, TOLOnews reported.

Earlier, 11 dead and about 25 wounded were reported.

That was the third deadly attack claimed by the group in the Afghan capital in December alone.

The casualties have been confirmed by Kabul Police.

Security in Kabul has been tightened since 31 May when a massive truck bomb ripped through the diplomatic quarter, killing some 150 people and wounding around 400 others, mostly civilians.

But experts say IS operates several cells in the city, enabling the group to plan and carry out attacks under the noses of Afghan security and intelligence agencies.
