SpaceX releases blooper reel of Falcon 9 "landings"

This spring, the company conducted the first-ever launch and flight of a reusable rocket. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

By landing the first stage, and using it over again, SpaceX figures to lower the cost of spaceflight. On Thursday, the company's CEO, Elon Musk, posted a compilation video of Falcon 9 launch vehicle crashes.

Billionaire Elon Musk has shared a sequence of clips demonstrating "how not to land" a SpaceX rocket. While the video shows something... different.

Well, the time has come, it seems, because after landing so many rockets it can be easy to forget just how hard - and majestic - the feat actually is. The score - the jaunty choice of John Philip Sousa's The Liberty Bell, which keen-eared comedy fans will recognize as the Monty Python theme song - is a nice touch. In space tech, as in other technology sectors, you have to crack a few eggs to make an omelette - but in SpaceX's case, those broken eggs just happen to result in spectacular explosions. While another is captioned: "Well, technically, it did land ... just not in one piece".

The video shows a range of issues, including exploding rockets, engine sensor failures and a sticky throttle valve.

Since December 2015, the company has landed a total of 16 rockets, on either a landing platform at sea or on land.

This SpaceX blooper video is a good example of what Musk meant back then.

And the firm hasn't lost a first stage in an attempted landing since June 2016.
