Iranian Delegation Visits Rohingya Refugee Camp in Bangladesh

An estimated 409,000 Rohingyas have arrived in Bangladesh until September 10, fleeing the military crackdown in Myanmar, says a UN report.

Police said they have now issued an order banning the Rohingya refugees from leaving the areas and camps the government has designated for them in the border district.

Ties between Bangladesh and Myanmar have been strained since Myanmar's military launched "clearance operations" on August 25 following an attack by Rohingya militants on police posts.

The 15-member Security Council met behind closed doors on Wednesday, at the request of Sweden and Britain, to discuss the crisis for the second time since it began and agreed to publicly condemn the situation.

The crisis has drawn global condemnation, with UN officials demanding Myanmar halt what they described as a campaign of ethnic cleansing that has driven nearly 400,000 Rohingya to flee Rakhine state.

State Department officials, speaking on background, say the situation there is so strained, with the military acting in some ways autonomously from the central government, that there are serious worries that strong criticism of the leadership would be seen as undermining the fragile democracy, could contribute to unrest in the form of mass rioting- and could end up with the military taking over.

The statement is the first time the Security Council has commented on Myanmar in nine years, according to British Ambassador to the UN Matthew Rycroft.

"She is concentrating on establishing stability", the spokesman said.
