UN seeks 'massive' help for Rohingya fleeing Myanmar 'ethnic cleansing'

A Rohingya man who fled his home village in Maungdaw township described finding his friend dead after a morning attack by the Myanmar military.

It's complicated. The Rohingya have roots in what is now Myanmar which stretch back centuries, but are very much a distinct group to the rest of the Myanmar population.

Nearly three weeks into a mass exodus of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar, thousands are still flooding across the border in search of help and safety in teeming refugee settlements in Bangladesh.

According to media reports, the violence began when Rohingya militants attacked police posts in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state.

People involved in providing humanitarian assistance to the refugees have called for a central coordination and proper initiatives, the Dhaka Tribune reported. The crisis snowballed with the Myanmar army pressing ahead with counter-terror operations in restive regions.

More than 370,000 Rohingya - many of them women and children - have fled to Bangladesh to escape violence since August 25, according to the United Nations. Bangladesh warned that the "provocative acts" could lead to consequences.

However, some inputs indicate that around 40,000 Rohingyas are staying in India illegally and the Rohingyas are largely located in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

US State Department official Patrick Murphy was set to visit Myanmar to press for an end to violence and allowing humanitarian aid in Rakhine state.
