Union: Up to 40K walking off the job at AT&T this weekend

"This is the largest walkout in the US since Verizon workers went on strike past year". The strike went on for 44 days until an agreement was reached.

Giga added that the strike involves less than 14 percent of AT&T's employees. - announced today that they will participate in a weekend-long strike in protest of AT&T's failure to provide "serious proposals" for workers. They didn't; the workers walked.

If the AT&T strike goes on for weeks at the time like the Verizon strike, it could result in a disappointing jobs report. Some 17,000 workers in California and Nevada walked off the job in late March to protest company changes in their working conditions in violation of federal law.

Thousands of AT&T wireless, wireline, and DirecTV workers who are part of the Communications Workers of America - the largest communications and media labor union in the U.S.

Christian sect attacks Congo prison, frees leader, 50 others
A police spokesperson told a local radio station, Radio Okapi, that the prisoners were risky , and called for anyone who saw them to tell the authorities.

AT&T has proposed to cut sick time and force long-time workers to pay hundreds of dollars more for basic healthcare, according to CWA. "It's up to AT&T now", said CWA District 1 Vice President Dennis Trainor. He wants to sabotage our healthcare then wants us to pay more for it. "This is a warning to AT&T: there's only one way out of this now-a fair contract-and we'll settle for nothing less".

The closings have devastated cities and towns across the US where unionized call center jobs represent some of the best employment available in working-class communities-like in Ridgeland, Mississippi, where AT&T shut down a call center employing 110 people. The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO fully supports the actions of CWA members demanding fair wages, affordable benefits and job security. They're outsourcing call centers, shipping them overseas, paying $2 or $3 an hour.

This weekend, a majority of AT&T wireless, wireline and DirecTV workers fighting for their contracts are expected to be on strike, according to a news release from the CWA. We have made every effort to bargain in good faith with AT&T but have been met with delays and excuses.

Just over half of the employees work for the company's wireless business, primarily in call centers and retail stores, and have been without a long-term contract since February. Sales commissions for store employees are also a sticking point. "Even my son will be out there with me".

Antonio Conte targets win record after league win
Chelsea could win the double too with an FA Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley to come. "Really, I can't, and I don't want to". John Terry celebrating his first goal of the season. "(And) the FA Cup final will be brilliant but only if we go and win it".

We have systematically and thoroughly prepared for a potential work stoppage, and we have a substantial contingency workforce of well-trained managers and vendors in place.

Full disclosure: In These Times staff are members of the Communication Workers of America, and the union is a sponsor of the magazine.
