Scherzer pitches 7 scoreless innings, Nats beat Braves 3-1

The Braves loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning and Kurt Suzuki drew a walk against reliever Blake Treinen to bring in a run.

D'Arnaud struck out swinging on the next pitch of his at-bat, though, giving the Nats the 3-1 win.

D'Arnaud clearly missed a pitch in the dirt, but the umpires gave him a second chance by inexplicably ruling it a foul tip.

The most inexplicable thing here was that d'Arnaud's swing wasn't even close to making contact. Josh Bell had tied the score with a fourth-inning homer against Michael Wacha (2-1). The 2016 NL Cy Young Award victor allowed only one other runner as far as second base, finishing with seven strikeouts. With Scherzer set to oppose Mike Foltynewicz in the pitching matchup, the over/under now sits at 7.5 runs. But the hard-throwing Braves pitcher settled down after a two-run fifth inning and worked seven innings while allowing five hits, two runs and four walks with three strikeouts.

It looks pretty clear that d'Arnaud whiffed completely on the pitch, and that's supported by the fact that the Atlanta batter ran to first base and didn't protest the strike three call. The stadium grounds crew started bringing out the rakes and hoses and various other items they use to keep the field in pristine condition.

But Washington has dominated its division rival over the last two-plus season, improving to 37-13 over their last 50 meetings. The game begins at 7:35 p.m. from SunTrust Park.

After Freeman drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, Nick Markakis singled and the Braves had their best scoring chance against Scherzer.

The Braves were just as confused as the Nationals. On a 3-1 pitch, he grounded sharply to shortstop Wilmer Difo, who started an easy double play to end the inning.

A walk, wild pitch and RBI double put Max Scherzer behind early in his last start before Tuesday night's, in what ended up a 6-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in D.C.

Matt Andriese outpitched Michael Fulmer, Tim Beckham hit a two-run homer, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers.

ATLANTA (AP) - Bryce Harper assumes everybody already knows the Washington Nationals will again be a team to watch in the National League. Atlanta C Tyler Flowers (right hamstring) was expected to be available to play the field again on Wednesday. But Braves catcher Kurt Suzuki alertly threw to third base when Harper tried to sneak a stolen base, and Harper was thrown out trying to retreat to second. Nationals SS Trea Turner (strained right hamstring) is eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday, but he'll have a rehab stint in the minors.
