O'Reilly out over harassment allegations

O'Reilly had a brief handshake with Pope Francis. "The Factor" will continue until then, with guests hosts Dana Perino tonight and Thursday night and Greg Gutfeld on Friday night. The New York Times reported earlier this month that O'Reilly, Fox and 21st Century had paid $13 million in settlements to five accusers.

O'Reilly's departure is the second sex scandal to rock the network in less than a year.

On Tuesday, 21st Century Fox received an anonymous complaint against O'Reilly from a black female employee who claimed that the anchor had "leered" at her and referred to her as "Hot Chocolate" in 2008.

Rupert Murdoch announced that he was terminating the network's most popular host in a letter on Wednesday afternoon that was signed by himself and his sons, Lachlan and James.

Both O'Reilly and Ailes have vehemently denied the allegations against them.

"I will always look back on my time at Fox with great pride in the unprecedented success we achieved and with my deepest gratitude to my dedicated viewers".

"You may have already heard - there are some major changes coming to the programming lineup here at Fox News Channel", "Special Report" host Bret Baier said.

The combative, conservative host is now on what he calls a "long-planned break", but had meant to return to his show on April 24.

In January, the network moved him to 9 p.m. after Megyn Kelly left.

O'Reilly has been off the air since last Wednesday, part of what was billed a planned vacation around the Easter holiday. "Bill has been the undisputed king of cable news, and for good reason". "Half of the fun that they have with their audiences comes from watching the outrage that they manage to provoke".

Without advertisers, Bill O'Reilly's show was no longer commercially viable.

NOW is calling for a thorough, independent investigation by New York City and state authorities into the culture of sexual and racial harassment at Fox News, and for appropriate accountability measures to be taken. According to ad-tracking firm Kantar Media, it brought in $147.13 million in advertising revenue in 2016.

New York Magazine and The Wall Street Journal reported O'Reilly's forthcoming demise, but the final decision still came as something of a shock. O'Reilly was alleged to have slowed the careers of women who spurned his advances. The larger issue here is more of the he said, she said that is going on regarding whether or not O'Reilly is guilty of anything.

The Times reports that Greene first shared her allegations about O'Reilly last fall, but only now agreed to go on the record.

Now, the top ratings for O'Reilly's time slot - and Fox's other prime-time shows - could be at risk.

Ruddy, of Newsmax, said Wednesday, "I think Bill O'Reilly was the heart and soul of that network, and he has unparalleled and unchallenged talent".
