Murray loses to Ramos-Vinolas at Monte Carlo Masters

Top-ranked Andy Murray threw away a 4-0 lead in the deciding set of his third-round match on Thursday as 15th-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas won 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Meanwhile, World No.3 Stan Wawrinka crashed out of the tournament after going down against 16th-seed Pablo Cuevas of Argentina 4-6, 4-6.

Rafael Nadal completely outclassed birthday boy Alexander Zverev 6-1 6-1 to storm into the Monte-Carlo Masters quarter-finals.

Murray made his first competitive appearance since returning from an elbow injury on Wednesday (19 April), seeing off Gilles Muller to book his place in the last 16. The match featured 13 service breaks, including seven against Murray, who struggled with Ramos-Vinolas' heavy forehands in his first meeting with the Spaniard.

"I m disappointed to lose from the position that I was in". "I haven't lost many matches like that in my career".

"Maybe tomorrow or a day after I ll be able to look back a little bit and think where I m at now from where I was a week ago".

Wawrinka never found his touch or range and conceded match point when his backhand pass - normally one of the best shots in men's tennis - clipped the net and went out. Cuevas hit a sweet forehand victor down the line on the next point and raised his arms in the air after beating Wawrinka in their first-ever meeting. It drew jeers from the center court crowd basking in the Mediterranean sun.

In another match, Nadal dropped a set in the second round against Kyle Edmund but was ruthless as he dispatched another young gun, the 20-year-old Zverev who was reduced to trashing rackets in frustration against the Spaniard.

Zverev stopped a nine-game rot by holding to make it 4-1, but it proved a brief reprieve as Nadal comfortably completed his progression to the last eight by breaking for the third time in the set. "We (were) supposed to play a tough match, that's what I thought".

Djokovic double-faulted on the first point of the third set, hit a wild forehand long to trail 0-30, and looked mightily relieved when he held serve.

Nadal will now face the victor of another pre-quarterfinal clash between Buenos Aires' Diego Schwartzman and Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. Nadal beat Schwartzman in straight sets in their two previous matches.

Ramos-Vinolas needed 2 1/2 hours to win, but could have got there faster after leading 5-3 in the tiebreaker - only for Cilic to level the set score with a volley that only just landed in.
